Saturday 10th August - Sunday 11th August Getting back the bike !

Getting back to the Motorcycle Shop people in Anchorage finally found us as much happy as the guys fixing Hombres bike themselves. Things being neatly repaired by new injection valves we put the rest of the bike back together, taking it for shorter testruns over town and then back to "Splended Hostel" where we spend the next 2 days preparing a couple of things like buying maps, guidebooks, new raingear, sunglasses ( of course who knows Baba well - this is sunglasses number 3 on the tour;-) ) etc. and just relaxing a bit from last weeks riding. We sorted out routes to go on, especially having received so many recommendations from nice people all over the place, being travellers or locals. Amongst them were many special people, namely Patrick and his wife from PlanB-Riders as well as Helmer from LA and of course again : The Ignazio-Bike-Clan from California, who we met again at the bikeshop.
Ein ganzes Stueck gluecklicher schauen wir schon aus,als wir nach Anchorage zurueckkehren und der Meister selbst an Hombres Bike schraubt. Alles wirkt korrekt repariert mit neuen Einlassventilen. Wir bauen das Bike wieder zusammen, um ersteinmal einige kleinere Testfahrten zu machen. Alles klingt ok, keine metallischen Gerausche aus dem Zylinderkopf und die Dichtungen haben kein Oelleck.
Halbwegs beruhigt fahren wir ersteinmal zum "Splendid Hostel" zurueck. Es gibt einiges fuer die weitere Fahrt durch Alaska zu organisieren.
Detail-Karten, amerikanische Reisefuehrer, neue Regenkombis ( die alten Polokombis haben uns zuletzt eher wie 2 vollgesaugte Schwaemme durch den fernen Osten rollen lassen.) ja und mal wieder eine Sonnenbrille fuer Baba ( wer mich kennt, weiss warum - auf dieser Tour ist es bisher Nummer drei ;-)) Eine kleine Verschnaufpause nach dem Trip der letzten Woche wird uns ebenso guttun, bevor wir w irwieder auf die ungezaehlten Pisten gehen, die uns all die wunderbaren Biker und Einheimischen empfohlen haben, die wir hier treffen.
Unter vielen fantastischen Menschen und stellvertetend fuer alle herzliche Hilfsbereitschaft sind die Tips von Patrick und seiner Frau von PLAN-B-Riders, Helmer aus Los Angeles und natuerlich : Wer sonst als der Ignacio-Bike-Clan, die wir in der Werkstatt wiedertreffen.

Very often when we talk to locals we finally find out, they were not born in Alaska but got stuck by either marrying an Alaskan or more often by simply being ways too fascinated from Alaska to ever leave it again. We feel a magic attraction in many Americans coming up to the place from "the lower 48 " as the Alaskans name Northamerica, excluding Hawai from it. Each time we hear that expression we imagine what makes this place so special - it's an outstanding personal freedom and independence from state laws and restricting rules compared to the rest of the US felt by the people living here in a closer community than anywhere else in America. Yet quite some older Alaskans keep stressing the fact, that things have fairly changed to the worse ever since the Alaskan Oil Boom in the early 1970s took off, this changing the traditional Alaskan values little by little, but steadily.
